Baby Bytes

The last 7 months have been very memorable and joyful with my niece who is now 7 months old. I am lucky to be living in the same city where she is and so have been seeing her growing up month after month. The day she was born and the first time I took her in my arms when she was just a few hours old, I was so overwhelmed. She was so tiny that she could easily be carried by a single arm. She kept looking at me and refused to sleep and I was unable to get myself to let go off her and I waited to leave from the hospital when she would go off to sleep. I told her that if she would sleep I could go back home. She closed her eyes but would keep opening her eyes every few seconds to check if I have left the room or not. That looked really funny as she was just a few hours old.

She loved listening to lullabies to be put to sleep. When her mother would sing she would eagerly listen and the moment I would start singing she would doze off to sleep. My sister sings well and I am a bathroom singer.  My niece has a loud and shrill voice and when she cried it sounded like someone was hurting her which would be very embarrassing when I was left to take care of her.

When she was 4 months old, my sister brought her to my home one day and the moment I opened the door, she took a few seconds to recognize me and flashed her toothless smile. It was more like she was welcoming me rather than me welcoming her. Now comes the notable moment of the day. As soon as I took her from my sister’s arms, she held my face and started smelling me. As much as I felt awkward as to what she was doing, I enjoyed every bit of it.

Another thing I noticed was that my niece would keep staring at me or just anyone who was eating something as she felt she was not being given any of those foods. One evening she was in my arms and I was sipping on my cup of tea. Every time I took a sip she would turn and look at my face. The moment I put the cup on the table she would look at the cup. This went on until I emptied the cup.  A couple of months passed by and my sister began feeding my niece porridge and a few other things. Now my niece wanted to taste more foods.

One day I go in the morning and as soon as I carry her, she bites into my nose. A few days later I happen to go again and as she was being fed the porridge, I had my breakfast. After we finished the meal, I carried her and the moment her face was close to mine, she began licking my lips. She wanted to taste the food I had eaten and this was the only way she could do it. My sister and I had a hearty laugh that day.

Every time I meet my niece there is something new and adventurous that she is up to. Its fun to see her, be with her and with all her naughtiness and innocence. Looking forward to more such wonderful times with her.

Games We Play

Unable to take my eyes off your face
Rested on my lips is where I notice your gaze
My heart skips a beat
As I let out a squeak
Struggling to free myself
From your clutches
Glimpses of our fight
Are what the moon snatches

Illusions

Caging you in my heart and mind
I one day just set you free
Painful though it was for me
I had to dissolve my need for thee
Was I weak or our chances were bleak
I now move into hiding as you go seek
To hold someone by the creek
You never were mine so to speak
